Our Purpose

To convince the world that Jesus is the only answer to our city's needs and to our personal needs.

Our Vision

God often chooses the least-likely of places to show up and show off. Memphis is the ‘Distribution Center of the World’. We believe God wants to use Memphis, as the starting point of a prayer movement that will move from city-to-city across the globe reconciling people to God and to each other.

In Luke 10:1, Jesus sent his disciples out two by two “ahead of Him to every town and place where He was about to go.”

Our vision is to watch Jesus renew the city of Memphis and cities across the globe, as we pray for the needs of our cities just two people at a time!

Our Mission: Transforming the world with hope, healing and unity.

Our Method: Prayer partnerships, just two people at a time.

Our Ministry

Two by Two is convinced that Jesus loves Memphis. We’re also convinced that Jesus is the only hope for Memphis! The Bible promises that when two of us get together about anything on earth and make a prayer of it, God goes into action. ( Matt. 18:19)

We pondered the question: What would Memphis look like if Jesus (who is the Transformer Himself) were reigning as Lord of our city? If we find hope, healing and unity in Christ alone, what would happen if we began to come together to ask for His reign over specific needs within our city?

We believe Jesus (The Transformer) wants to come and transform our city! That’s why Two by Two is committed to come alongside and fan the flame for a movement that helps connect prayer partners across racial, economic and denominational barriers. As we pray about specific needs in Memphis, we believe Jesus will show up in big ways. These intentional partnerships, built into natural spheres and rhythms of our lives, will create sustainable prayer networks breaking down barriers and establishing trust.

Two by Two uniquely partners people to pray across racial lines.

Reconciliation occurs one relationship at a time. In order for the world to come to know Jesus, the Church must take the lead for unity (John 17:23).

The strategy of Two by Two is not only to enlist people to pray together inter-racially, but to motivate people to pray period. When our prayers set Jesus into action, our city is changed, our neighborhoods are changed and we are changed.

The end result for the city of Memphis will be hope, healing and unity, as Jesus comes to town and establishes His reign.

Our History

In March of 2007, Kelly Johnson was burdened to pray for the city of Memphis. As she prayed, her heart fell in love with the city. She also was increasingly burdened for racial reconciliation and felt called to bring hope to the city of Memphis.

After over a year of waiting on God and many research visits to learn about the city, Kelly noticed that although there were some very effective ministries in Memphis, there were still some dire problems that only Jesus and prayer could solve.

In May of 2008, Kelly began a prayer partnership with an African American in Memphis. The friendship that ensued and the amazing things they learned about one another as they prayed together spawned the idea for Two by Two. To read more about Kelly’s dear friend and prayer partner, Carmen Franklin, read our story.

Statement of Faith

We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, supernaturally inspired. We believe that it’s inerrant in the original manuscripts and preserved by God; and that it’s a divinely authoritative standard for every age and every life.

We believe that the Godhead exists eternally in three persons; Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and that these three are one God. We believe that God is the absolute and sole creator of the universe and that creation was by divine command. We believe that God, by His sovereign choice and out of love for men, sent Christ into the world to save all sinners.

We believe that Jesus Christ in the flesh was both God and man. He was born of a virgin and lived a sinless life. He was crucified, died as a penalty for our sins and was raised from the dead bodily on the third day. Later, he ascended to the Father’s right hand where He is the head of the church and intercedes for believers. He is coming again personally, bodily and visibly to this earth to set up His kingdom. We believe that since in His death, by His shed blood, the Lord Jesus Christ made a perfect atonement for sin, redeeming us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. We are saved and justified on the simple and single ground of the shed blood. We believe that such salvation with its forgiveness of sins, its impartation of a new nature and its hope of eternal life is entirely apart from good works, baptism, church membership or man’s effort and is of pure grace.

We believe that it’s the goal of every Christian to become a disciple of Christ by growing toward spiritual maturity through the knowledge of and obedience to the Word of God and submission to the Holy Spirit, who indwells and seals all believers at the moment of salvation. Believers must seek the fullness of the Spirit since it’s His influence that will bring about victorious Christian living on earth. We believe that every true Christian is to be a dynamic part of a local church since this is God’s primary context for spiritual development and community impact.

What We Believe

We believe Jesus is our Hope. It is only through Him that we are reconciled first to God and then able to reconcile with each other. (Eph. 2: 14–16) Then:

  • We become Christ’s Ambassadors of Reconciliation (2 Cor. 5:18–20)
  • We become sign-posts toward Christ - the Hope of our city (Col. 1:27)
  • We fulfill Jesus’ prayer for Unity (so the world will know) – (John 17:23)
  • We will see ‘our land’ healed. (2 Chron. 7:14)
